The thyroid gland is attached to the trachea at the lower part of the neck. It regulates numerous body functions, including temperature control, metabolism, and energy. Thyroid dysfunction, whether hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, is usually managed with medication by a family physician or endocrinologist.
When a surgical consultation is required to assess a thyroid nodule or goiter, patients are referred to Lakeview Surgery Centre. The patient's thyroid function is usually normal or regulated by medication in these cases. Surgery is recommended when the thyroid nodule is suspicious or cancerous, or when the thyroid goiter is causing pressure on the trachea or esophagus. The two most common thyroid surgery procedures are a hemithyroidectomy (removal of half of the thyroid gland) and a total thyroidectomy.
