Skin Cancer Surgery

Surgery for Melanoma, Basal Cell Cancer & Squamous Cell Cancer

The three most common skin cancers are melanoma, basal cell cancer, and squamous cell cancer.

Warning signs for melanoma are asymmetry in colour, border irregularity, dark colour, and size over 6mm. Adequate excision of melanomas requires a suitable margin of normal skin surrounding its border, which will be determined by the depth of the melanoma. A sentinel node biopsy is required for deeper melanomas.

Basal and squamous cell cancers are usually confined to the skin alone, but also require a suitable margin of normal skin surrounding their borders.
