An external hernia is a defect in the abdominal muscles that may occur in several locations. Hernias can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired in adulthood. Small hernias can be repaired by suturing the surrounding muscles to close the defect, whereas larger hernias and inguinal hernias are repaired using mesh. This approach results in a tension-free repair, leading to low recurrence rates.

Inguinal hernias are among the most common defects. In the early 1990s, two general surgeons in Freehold, New Jersey designed the Bard Mesh Plug® for inguinal hernia repairs in adults. The Mesh Plug technique has become the most widely used procedure for inguinal hernia repairs in North America, and is the procedure of choice at Lakeview Surgery Centre. It has numerous advantages over other inguinal hernia repair techniques, including less postoperative discomfort, a shorter convalescence period, and a low recurrence rate (0.1% to 0.5%).
