Lipomas are fatty and benign tumours that grow in the subcutanous space, located between the skin and the muscle. They are essentially lumps of fat that are wrapped in a fibrous covering. Aside from discomfort, pain and a visible presence, there are typically no other symptoms. They do not pose severe health complications and the risk of developing into something dangerous (such as cancer) is very minimal. They are seldom over 10cm in size. It’s estimated that approximately one percent of the general population has a lipoma.
Lipomas usually develop in people aged 40 to 60 years old, although they can occur at any age. They have even been found in children. Medical research indicates that their development may be related to trauma or injury to the affected soft tissue.
Dr. Guirguis removes lipomas on the face or body, quickly and permanently. Most can be removed under local anesthesia. The process of removing lipomas takes 15 – 30 minutes and there is little to no downtime. You can have the procedure and go right back to your life, while avoiding strenuous activities while stitches are in place. Dissolvable stitches are used so that no stitches need to be removed. If the lipoma is suspicious, we can send it to a pathologist to be examined further to determine if it is problematic.
It’s a very safe and straightforward procedure. Many of our clients are shocked at how easy the entire process is, and they can even go back to work the same day they have their surgery.
